Yeah I had some R&S compilations back in the day. In my memory they sound
old and dated but my memory is pretty bad these days.

Was the early techno/house better because people were having fun with new
(and limited, by today's standards) technology, or because they had
non-electronic musical backgrounds? Or was it that the sounds were new to
the listeners, and now we're jaded by hearing the same beats/sounds/grooves
recycled over and over?

I think what sounds original to me these days is (a) new sounds or (b)
acoustic/electronic combinations. For example Arthur Russell's (early
house). "In the Light of a Miracle" has what sounds like live
instrumentation combined with some playful vocals. It has a really nice
loose feel. A lot of the tech house stuff produced nowadays sounds locked
into cliches. Don't get me wrong I like those cliches, but they do limit the
sonic experience.

Anyhoo, sorry to go off on a tangent. I'll be kicked off this mailing list
soon, I'm sure. But at least I'm deleting the excess text now ;-)

Cheers
Dan
