Okay ..
Well the .3rd Resistance truly smashed it again at Canaan Downs Festival
Presenting from the very edge of reality NZ only Techno driven dance zone.
Thanks to all who came along and participated or experienced the show.
I was absolutely stunned at the numbers of people enjoying the beats, I
estimate at peak times the zone supported apx 500 people dancing to
decidedly stripped back and thumping minimal & techno.
Feedback has been unanimous that the music in the .3rd was some of the best
at the Festival. Which is slightly confusing for me since in the urban
setting people seem to universally reject minimal & techno.
However I think the tides are turning as more and more Dj's bring Techno'esk
sounds into their sets.
Anyway looking forward :: KILL! CLUB is back on target to smash out the
shows this year. Now that Ben and me have our brains back from the
Festival we are on the production mission to put together a schedule of
events.
We thought we would take the advantage of the nice summer weather and are
considering another outdoor show before autumn / winter kicks in. The
outdoor crowd seem to be picking up the minimal vibe quicker than the city
kids so we are keen to lock in support before we have to go indoors.
As to clubbing .. we %100 have some serious plans to deliver the goods this
year. Do or die really. We know the sound is kicking and that kids around
the globe are losing their shoes to techno ... as such we are not really
prepared to let anyone miss out on the fun.
So as per K!C will continue an aggressive policy of techno delivery. Love
or hate the style .. we don't really care. Its about a ridiculous amount of
passion an commitment to presenting what we love about the music. Raising
the temperature is all par to course.
..
Other stuff happening .. I know that RDU has a new minimal / other show on
Monday night and the same boys have made a foray into the Concrete Club
(chch) on a regular Friday night I think. So the sound is spreading,
seeping into the edges of the breaks dominated culture of Chch.
I do know that the (post) psy trance kids are rapidly shifting gears to
minimal sounds. Still not quite content to let go of their "psy" connection
.. I am a little miffed that the more feral end of the music spectrum
figured it out before the clubbers .. but I think any fan of techno is okay.
For me though .. these new types of Techno fans are quite interesting. With
absolutely no connection at all to the history of techno (or minimal) their
relationship to the music is solely to do with what they like. To some
degree some of the "psy" kids don't see minimal techno as anything other
than an evolution of their "psy" sounds"
Admittedly the "psy" music I have heard over the past few years has been
slowly loosing its intensive psychedelic synth lines and trending towards
stripped back productions of a similar ilk. Same structures and
compositions but more minimal ' in styling & technique.
Which is why in general I would argue that 'minimal' is a musical technique
not really a genre, similar to 'dub' as a technique that can be applied to
any musical genre.
Speaking of which who went to see Rhythm & Sound and was surprised to be at
a reggae gig?
..
Anyway .. I predict that this year we will see a mainstream adoption of
'minimal' with radio stations like the edge and 91ZM playing 'minimal' style
remixes of popular tunes. (this is already happening btw)
Also many many DJ's who previously played other genre of music will start to
play 'minimal' and proclaim to be long time proponents of the sound. The
worst offenders will be hard dance Dj's who will re stylise their whole look
to be like Ritchie's.
Club music in general will trend towards the more European club feel of
minimal as the Ibiza compilations of 2006 & 2007 pump through the
hairdressers stereos, boy racers cars and strip mall fashion shops. This
will see a massive and rapid ground swell in support for the commercialised
minimal sound, replacing the trashy electro club gag-mush reality of the
past few years.
Soon everyone will be riding the 'minimal' pony ... .
Which of course spells doom, disaster, dismay and despondency in the
underground of techno. Many of whom will shake their tiny underground fists
at the abysmal display of garish atrocities and blaring boorish simulations
of all that is true, deep and real.
So to come full circle KILL! CLUB intends to play a daring line of seek and
destroy deep in the heart of commercialism. We intend to ride the wave of
mindless enthusiasm and smash cold hard rocking techno direct into the main
vein of the dance floor.
This is mission of absolution, a strategic and decisive goal for survival.
Of course I could be completely wrong about everything .. however that's not
going to change my mind or objective to play the music we want in the way we
want to play it to any person we can convince to listen.
So I hope everyone out there is strapping thier techno boots on and
preparing to kick ass this year.
Cheers
.simon
